From basic principles to practical operation

Aquaponics combines fish production and soil-free plant cultivation in a recirculating system. The academy introduces the biological relationships that make these systems work, then gives learners practical exposure to routine operation, monitoring and problem-solving.

The training is intended to build realistic expectations. Learners are shown that successful aquaponics requires observation, accurate record keeping, disciplined maintenance and careful matching of fish, plants, water volume and filtration capacity.

Course outcomes

Build practical confidence across the complete system

Course depth may vary by programme, but each course is designed around the core disciplines required to understand and manage an aquaponics operation.

01

Fish production

Understand species selection, stocking considerations, feeding, fish health, humane handling and the relationship between feed input and system capacity.

02

Water chemistry

Learn why temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate matter, how to test them and how to respond to unsafe trends.

03

Plant nutrition

Explore crop selection, nutrient availability, deficiency symptoms, seedling establishment, pest observation and responsible supplementation.

04

System design

Examine grow beds, fish tanks, pumps, pipework, aeration and filtration, with emphasis on water flow, redundancy, accessibility and safe sizing.

05

Business planning

Consider target markets, production assumptions, input costs, pricing, record keeping and risk before committing capital to a commercial venture.

06

Maintenance

Develop routine inspection and cleaning practices, identify warning signs, plan for power or pump failure and keep useful operational records.

Hands-on practical training

Work with the system, not only the theory

Practical sessions may include water-quality testing, inspection of fish and plants, feeding calculations, component identification, flow checks, routine cleaning and discussion of common system faults. Activities depend on the course level, season and operating conditions at the training facility.

Safety, biosecurity and responsible animal care are incorporated into practical activities. Learners are encouraged to ask questions and relate the exercises to the type and scale of system they intend to operate.

Attendance certificates

An attendance certificate will be issued to participants who complete the applicable course. Unless specifically stated for a listed course, this should not be interpreted as an accredited qualification or occupational certification.

Accommodation information

Accommodation is not assumed to be included in the course fee. Where required, the academy can provide information about nearby accommodation options. Learners remain responsible for confirming availability, rates, transport and reservations directly with the provider.
